Auditions – Social Climbers - a play by Roger Hall
Saturday 8 November 2014 @ 1.30pm Stables Theatre, Cnr Arthur St & Main Highway, Ellerslie, Auckland
In this New Zealand comedy from Roger Hall, we watch five teachers and a rebellious art student trapped in a hiking hut high in the mountains. Torrential rains and a washed out bridge confines them together for three days. Two days in everything's chummy - sort of like high school camp. Three days in, they're definitely not happy campers. An insightful situation comedy about truth, consequences and unexpected revelation.
'They have collegial links - teachers' counsellors - but they have private lives of stress and worry, the fragility of job tenure, unrealised ambitions, a straying husband, lost love, a child adopted out years back and no replacement since - all that.' ~ Southland Times
The Director – Sian Davis
After much stage experience, Sian turned to directing in 1998 (not totally true as she’d directed school stuff as a teacher). The 1998 opener was ‘Hedda Gabler’ and that really gave her a taste for the quality ‘stuff’. Since then she has directed a melange of the classical and most wonderful (in her book) and, occasionally, the not so entrancing.... an eclectic mix in any case, which has ranged from Shakespeare (‘Twelfth Night’ for the University of Auckland’s Summer Shakespeare in 2004) to ‘The Mousetrap’ (yes, that ‘The Mousetrap’) for Company Theatre in Dec. 2012- her ‘ditziest’, in her accounting, (oh, come on, who couldn't miss that the butler did it!...unless they noticed there was no butler in it). She has to admit that it was likely to have been the most popular of her productions with audiences.
Sian is particularly interested in promoting the staging of New Zealand plays and over half of those 28 productions (up to the time of writing) have been of NZ plays, she is proud to own.
