By the beginning of 1918, although Germany was winning the war in the east, its forces were running out of matériel and its civilians out of food. The German High Command knew that they stood little hope of winning the war in the west. General Ludendorff had an audacious plan to break through the Allied lines and cut off the Allies’ attempts at retreat.

R C Sherriff’s award winning play takes us to a single dugout in the trenches for the days leading up to the German attack. Eighteen-year-old 2nd Lieutenant Raleigh is the new arrival in the company commanded by his former school friend and hero, Captain Stanhope. Raleigh soon realizes that Stanhope, who is courting his sister back home, is no longer the boy he once knew.

Journey's End tells the story of how brave men cope with their situation with guarded humour, uncommon courage and dignity, and also captures the seldom seen side of war: the anxiety of waiting.
