David Charteris

Ever since I saw the premiere performance of Boys at the Beach at Centrepoint Theatre in Palmerston North in 1999, I have always wanted to direct this terrific New Zealand script. “It seems such a long time ago, but this play has stayed in my head but I never had the opportunity to direct it. Until now.”

Eighteen years later, Ellerslie Theatrical Society said yes, so I present to you, with the help of Keith Harding’s effective set and a very talented cast, my 118th production as a director.

Many of you would have seen me here as an actor playing a wide variety of roles over the last four years, my favourite being the Narrator in The End of the Golden Weather.

From here I go to play Sir in The Dresser for the Waiheke Theatre Company, to direct for Dolphin Theatre, back to Waiheke to direct and finish the year with six performances of my critically acclaimed solo show One of Those at Garnet Station Tiny Theatre.

My sincere thanks to all here at Ellerslie who helped shape this production into the success I am sure it is going to be, to kick-start their exciting 2017 programme.

**********
David Charteris decided early in life between being an actor and a dancer. He has been a professional actor and director for over 45 years, working for theatre companies in Whanganui, Christchurch, Palmerston North, Tauranga, Auckland and Hamilton. He started theatre companies in Auckland and Whanganui, and ran other theatre companies in Tauranga and Manukau, and has been on several national tours of plays. David likes to direct comedy – his first was Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park in 1975 – as he likes to play comedy as an actor, but he has directed all genres, including musicals and operas.

David was awarded a government Most Innovative Tour Award for the Murder Mystery Weekends at the Brian Boru Hotel, Thames. Now based in Auckland, he is closely involved with ETS, having appeared in several plays here, including three of the six one-act plays in 2015, then The Playboy of the Western World in November 2015, followed by The End of the Golden Weather in 2016.
